Meyer Burger shows how EU funds become innovations

Europe Week at the beginning of May is an opportunity for Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs, Martin Dulig, to visit exemplary companies in the region that demonstrate how concretely Europe supports Saxony - whether in research, as at Meyer Burger, or in climate protection or in the area of skilled workers and further training. It's all about investing in bright minds and future-proof processes and products to make Saxony as livable as possible.

Of course the sun is shining when Martin Dulig visits Meyer Burger's headquarters in Hohenstein-Ernstthal on the occasion of Europe Week. The Saxon Minister of Economic Affairs wanted to know from selected innovation companies in the Free State how EU projects are helping to strengthen their competitiveness.

From 2014 to 2020, the Free State of Saxony received around 2.8 billion euros from the European Union's structural funds - 2.1 billion euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and around 700 million euros from the European Social Fund (ESF). In the 2021 to 2027 funding period, Saxony is expected to receive around 2.54 billion euros, according to the Ministry of Economics.

"The growing together of the EU promotes secure jobs and good ideas in Saxony. EU funding benefits every citizen in all regions of the Free State. Europe is good for Saxony - Saxony is good for Europe," said Dulig.

He was able to see for himself at Meyer Burger how European funding is used in concrete terms. Together with CEO Gunter Erfurt, he explored the heart of the company in Hohenstein - the demonstration line of the research department. This is where the latest machines for solar cell and module production are developed, tested and brought to market maturity. EU funding has played a significant role in this. Gunter Erfurt will talk about exactly how Meyer Burger generates innovative ideas and creates new jobs in Saxony at 5 p.m. in the livestream of the Saxon Ministry of Economics. The topic: "What does the EU bring? How much does Saxony benefit? And what do the European Structural Funds do?"
