Meyer Burger installs futuristic roof-top solar panel system on the Arena Thun

3S Photovoltaics, a member of the Meyer Burger Technology Group [ticker: MBTN], has supplied the solar modules which have been installed on the roof of the Arena Thun. The frameless roof system guarantees high yields of solar-generated electricity with a reduced payback time.

For the stadium project in Thun, the experts for highly efficient building integrated solar systems in Lyss used a new type of modular system, characterised by its strong yield (nominal yield 245 Wp per module). The new 3S Photovoltaics concept reduces the solar module to its core functions. It dispenses, for example, with the aluminium frame for the module. Designed with ultra-robust cover glass, the module has an optimal load capacity. “In developing the module, we worked on the principle of reducing its construction to the core requirements for solar power generation”, says Christian Renken, Head of 3S Photovoltaics. “We also take this approach with smaller systems,” he adds, “and this year we will be launching a product for home owners who want to produce solar power using a roof system.” The absence of a frame prevents dirt from building up on the edges of the modules and thus ensures long-term, maximum energy production. Moreover, the payback time is shortened thanks to the sparse use of aluminium.

The new football stadium is not only one of the most modern sports arenas in Switzerland; it also has one of the largest photovoltaic installations in the Bernese Oberland. With around 1,700 solar modules, the roof area of the stadium will produce approximately 360,000kWh of solar power per year beginning this September. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 80 households.

The new system is being installed by Bernhard Polybau AG, contracted by the newly established company Thun Solar AG. The energy produced will be purchased by Energie Wasser Bern and Energie Thun.

About Meyer Burger Technology Ltd

www.meyerburger.com

Meyer Burger is one of the world’s leading providers of innovative systems and production lines for photovoltaics in the solar industry and for the semiconductor and optoelectronic industries. Highly efficient wafers made from silicon, sapphire and other crystals are required in these three markets to manufacture solar modules, switching circuits or high-performance LEDs. The Group’s core competences encompass a broad range of production processes, machines and systems that are used for the production of ultra-thin, high quality wafers, for the inspection and measurement of solar cells, for laminating, soldering and testing of solar module and for building-integrated solar systems. With the acquisition of Roth & Rau AG, with its cutting-edge products and technologies for the next generation of crystalline silicon solar cells, Meyer Burger Group is further expanding its market leadership along the entire photovoltaics value chain. The merger of the two companies creates a full-line system provider which covers the most important technology elements in the photovoltaics value chain, from crystalline silicon to complete solar systems, specifically in the production processes of wafering, solar cells and solar modules. The Group’s comprehensive range of products includes a worldwide service network with wear and tear parts, consumables, re-grooving services, process know-how, servicing, after-sales services, training and other services. As a globally active company, Meyer Burger Group is represented in Europe, Asia and North America in the respective key markets and has over 2,500 employees since the Group’s expansion in August 2011.

Meyer Burger has its headquarters and the production facility of MB Wafertec (Meyer Burger Ltd) in Switzerland, while the group companies, Meyer Burger Automation GmbH, Hennecke Systems GmbH and AMB Apparate + Maschinenbau GmbH have their headquarters and production facilities in Germany. Diamond Wire Materials Tech, Inc. has its headquarters in Colorado Springs, CO, USA. The production facilities of 3S Modultec, 3S Photovoltaics and Pasan are also located in Switzerland, while Somont is located in Germany.
